I think we’ve all reached a place where we can acknowledge that there are both good and bad things about social media.
On one hand, it’s created millions of jobs and enabled vast amounts of wealth and inter-connectivity.
On the other hand, it’s made pretty much everyone a little more insecure, unhappy, and fake.
I’d like to address one of the unfortunate outcomes of this social world we live in.
The problem with being able to edit our appearance to the social media world is two fold.
First, people typically see your social media image more often than your real life image, making it a bigger part of their belief about you.
They might know you’re unhappy and hate your job, but it’s easy to forget that when you’re popping bottles of Veuve Clicquot on your rooftop terrace in Manhattan.
And second, over time, this image gets reinforced over and over again until people pretty much completely lose touch with reality.
Social media makes everyone seem better looking, happier, more successful, more popular, and all around better than you.
What sucks about this truth is that it has made us all afraid to suck.
We were never meant to be constantly exposed to perfect photos of perfect people every time we sit down to use the loo. Yet, here we are.
What sucks about being afraid to suck is that it makes us all stay put. Stay static.
It makes us not want to go out. Not try new things. Not take risks.
One of the greatest joys of this life is mastery. It’s setting out to accomplish something new, sucking at it at first, then getting better, then accomplishing it.
When we are afraid to suck. We never start.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, remember that everyone who’s anyone sucked at first.
We all suck at something.
But sucking is a necessary part of starting.
So stop being afraid to suck and go get started.
